Road Salt

How to Prep for Wintery Weather

Using Road Salt for Icy Surfaces

The holiday season brings wintery weather and not using road salt correctly can harm our streams and cause pollution. Here's how you can help!

Why It Matters

Snow and ice melt carry road salt in storm drains and local waterways. Too much salt in water can harm plants and animals that live in or near streams and rivers. Road salt dehydrates plant roots that and animals can mistake road salt for food.

Before Applying Salt

Shovel or scrape as much snow and ice from the sidewalk, driveway, or road before applying salt.

When Applying Salt

Follow directions on the salt bag or container and apply to slick and icy areas only.

After Applying Salt

If you need more salt because the area is still icy - don't use too much! Sweep up any extra salt after the ice melts.
