June marks Gun Safety Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness about responsible firearm ownership, safe storage practices, and community efforts to prevent gun violence. The Raleigh Police Department (RPD) is encouraging everyone to take this opportunity to reflect on how we can work together to promote a safer community.
Gun safety is everyone’s responsibility. Whether you're a gun owner, live in a household with firearms, or simply care about the well-being of your neighbors, practicing and promoting safe habits can save lives.
RPD recommends the following safety tips:
- Always store firearms unloaded and locked away in a secure location.
- Use gun safes or lockboxes, and utilize gun locks where applicable.
- Keep ammunition stored separately from firearms.
- Talk to your children and family about gun safety and the importance of not touching a firearm without adult supervision.
- If you see something, say something. Report suspicious activity or illegal firearms possession to law enforcement.
This month, the department is hosting several Gun Lock Giveaway events in our community to promote safe gun ownership and awareness.
