City Seeks Applicants for Telecommunicator Academy

Do you enjoy helping others and serving your community? The City is seeking Call Takers and Telecommunicators for the Raleigh-Wake Emergency Communications Center (ECC). Training is provided.  

Job responsibilities include answering incoming emergency (911), non‐emergency, and administrative calls, obtaining needed information from the callers, and entering that data into a computer-aided dispatch (CAD) system. A call taker’s annual salary is $41,203 and a telecommunicator’s annual salary is $44,358.

The Raleigh-Wake ECC provides 911 services to a general population of more than 1.15 million people. Currently, the Center handles more than 1.1 million telephone calls per year.
 

Training: Telecommunicator Academy

Accepted applicants will attend a 12-14-week long Telecommunicator Academy scheduled to start on March 21, 2024. During the academy, trainees receive basic training to become call takers or telecommunicators. Recruits receive a salary and full benefits as soon as the Telecommunicator Academy begins. 

Upon successful completion of the training academy, hands-on job training begins.

To apply for the call taker or telecommunicator position, submit the online application by 11:59 p.m. on Jan. 8, 2024

Applicants are reviewed for eligibility requirements, and qualified candidates will receive an invitation to take an employment skills test through CritiCall. The online test measures several job‐related skills, including:

  • Data entry;
  • Typing speed and accuracy;
  • Spelling; 
  • Reading comprehension; 
  • Sentence clarity;
  • Memory recall;
  • multi‐tasking;
  • Call summarization and prioritization;
  • Decision-making; and,
  • Map reading.

Applicants that receive a passing score on the CritiCall test will then have a virtual interview with a panel. Candidates who receive a favorable recommendation from the panel (including satisfactory results of a criminal history investigation) will participate in a psychological evaluation, along with additional steps.

Virtual Information Sessions

The ECC will held three information sessions regarding the Telecommunicator Academy via Microsoft Teams.
