John Chavis Memorial Park

John Chavis Memorial Park honors the achievements, history, and heritage of African American trailblazers. In honor of Black History Month, JCMP will host a series of events that celebrate the legacy of the African American Experience. All events are at no cost. 

Personal History Workshop for Seniors

Drop-In Workshop, Thursday, Feb. 1, 11 a.m. - 3 p.m., Ages 55+
Presentation, Thursday, Feb. 29, noon - 1 p.m., Ages 55+
Did you know you are a historian? Everyone has a story to tell, and your personal history can inspire, encourage, and form future generations. Please share your history with us and come back to see how our personal histories tell a larger story. 

Get Moving at Chavis: Walk and Groove at Chavis Indoor Track

Friday, Feb. 2, 10 a.m. - 9 p.m., All ages
Get moving to your favorite old-school tunes! When you come to walk, be sure to enter your name into our raffles!

Black History Trivia

Tuesday, Feb. 6, 7 -9 p.m., All ages
Gather your friends and compete to be the best black history historians on the block! On MLK’s block that is! You will team up with friends and neighbors and test your knowledge on everything black history. Raleigh Black history guaranteed! All participants will leave with a prize!

Kids Storytime and Craft: Spotlight on a Scientist

Wednesday, Feb. 7, 5:30-7:30 p.m., Ages 5-12
Kids will listen to empowering stories of Black history through science that encourages, motivates and uplifts. Participants will also have the opportunity to perform a science experiment.

Spotlight on an African American Athlete: Tots Storytime and Play

Monday, Feb. 12, 10:30-11:30 a.m., Ages 2-5
Bring out your toddler’s inner athlete with story time and play where they will learn about an African American athlete.

Black Inventors Workshop for Kids

Saturday, Feb. 17, 11 a.m. - 1 p.m., Ages 5-12
Did you know that the stoplight, the IBM personal computer, and elevator doors were all invented or co-invented by African Americans? Discover the unique and innovative inventions and amazing accomplishments of African Americans. Participants will use their imagination at the end to create their own inventions.

Stories of the Past, Present, and Future

Wednesday, Feb. 21, 6:30 - 8:30 p.m., All ages
Come share your stories and learn about oral history with your fellow community members! Please bring a laptop or phone to record your interviews, and invite a friend, family member, neighbor, or make a new friend at the program to interview!

Legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen

Tuesday, Feb. 27, 6 - 7:30 p.m., All ages
Learn about the legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen through the Heart of the Carolina Chapter of the Tuskegee Airmen. There will be an interactive component to this presentation to celebrate, empower, and encourage.

Black History: Share Your Story

Thursday, Feb. 29, 6:30 - 8:30 p.m., All ages
We stand on the shoulders of many. Not all African American pioneers made the history book. This is your opportunity to share your personal story of a notable African American that has influenced your life.
