Mordecai Historic Park Field Trips

Mordecai Historic Park offers field trips for schools of all kinds, Tuesdays through Fridays from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Our field trips consist of three, 45-minute programs. Please see below for activity options.

Mordecai House and ArtifactsInside the Mordecai House
  • Students will learn how daily life has changed over time and how the Mordecai family lived in early Raleigh.
  • Students will use their reasoning skills to determine the use of artifacts found within the home.
Slavery and ArchaeologyInside the Historic Allen Kitchen or outside on park grounds
  • Students will learn about the experiences and day-to-day lives of people enslaved at Mordecai in the 19th century and how we interpret objects to tell their stories.
  • Students will dig for and analyze artifacts on a mini archaeological dig. 
Andrew Johnson (free)Inside the Andrew Johnson Birthplace and St. Mark’s Chapel
  • Students visit the birthplace of Andrew Johnson, the 17th President of the United States, and learn about his early life in Raleigh.
  • Students learn about Johnson’s presidential term and impeachment, and have a chance to participate in their own impeachment trial. 
Historic Raleigh Trolley (paid)Historic Raleigh Trolley
  • Students will step aboard the Historic Raleigh Trolley to tour downtown Raleigh and learn about its past.
  • Students will learn about the founding of Raleigh, see historic buildings and landmarks, and learn about important historical figures that influenced Raleigh’s development and culture.

    • Cost: $50 for the first trolley and $40 per additional trolley run

Important Information

  • The maximum student capacity is 72 students per day for Option 1 (inc. the Andrew Johnson program). Option 2, with the Historic Raleigh Trolley program, has a maximum capacity of 68 students per day.
  • Programs continue regardless of the weather and include some time outdoors. Students and adults should dress appropriately for the weather.
  • Our field trip programs are designed for children 5 and older. We ask that alternate plans be made for children under the age of 5.
