A Peek Inside the City Parks Greenhouse

Behind the scenes at the City of Raleigh Parks, a tiny team is growing the plants that bring life to neighborhoods across the city.

The Parks greenhouse and nursery supplies plant material for community gardens, city parks, greenways, green stormwater infrastructure, and nature preserves. Last year alone, staff grew 42,000 plants, and this year's pace is strong despite the drought. So far, gardeners have planted 7,600 perennials.

Right now, the nursery is caring for:

  • 800 trees
  • 13,000 perennials, representing more than 400 species, 75% of them native
  • 12,000 fall annuals

Growing plants in-house lets the City select species suited to local conditions, support pollinators and wildlife with native plantings, and keep preserves and green infrastructure projects stocked with healthy, locally grown material.
