Preserving history helps connect people with previous generations and provides lessons for the future. That’s where the Chavis-Dix Strollway comes in. The 1.3 mile Strollway will become Raleigh’s second cultural trail, featuring streetscape improvements, wayfinding signage, and interpretive elements that honor the community’s history. The city’s first cultural trail – the South Park Heritage Trail – is fully funded and currently in the design development phase.
Now partially funded, the Strollway is being advanced as a concept plan. Once complete, it will create a walkable, meaningful connection between two of Raleigh’s most cherished parks: Dorothea Dix Park and John Chavis Memorial Park. It will also expand the storytelling that celebrates our city’s rich cultural heritage.
As momentum builds, the Fourth Ward Association recently hosted a bus tour on Aug. 13 highlighting the history and heritage of Raleigh’s Third and Fourth Wards – stories that will be woven throughout the Strollway. The event drew an enthusiastic crowd and showcased the community’s excitement for what’s ahead.
If you’re interested in learning more, we invite you to join us for the next public meeting on Aug. 20 from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. at the Greg Poole Jr. All Faiths Chapel (1030 Richardson Dr., Raleigh). We’ll begin with a project overview at 5:45 p.m., share the vision and scope of the Strollway, and present draft concepts and timelines. Most importantly, we want to hear your stories and experiences – your input will help shape the interpretive elements and wayfinding features along the trail. An online survey will be available after the meeting for additional feedback.
We hope to see you there! For more news and updates on Downtown Raleigh projects, please visit our website.
