"Imagining Early American Jews" Book Talk

Mordecai Historic Park

Literature professor and historian Michael Hoberman will visit Mordecai Historic Park to speak about his new book "Imagining Early American Jews."

Attorney Moses Mordecai relinquished his Judaism when he married Raleigh's Margaret Lane in 1817, but the house that he and his family lived in is one of a handful of antebellum-era American house museums that commemorates a man who was born Jewish. In the present day, the house relays two stories about American history despite limited material evidence: Moses’ abandonment of his faith and the Mordecais’ enslavement of dozens of Black men, women, and children.

In his new book, Hoberman explores the meanings and implications that this complicated history bears for us in the present. He will discuss the book and copies will be available for sale and signings.
