Gipson Play Plaza: Big Play, Big Investment

When the Gipson Play Plaza opens at Dix Park on June 6, it will launch more than a new public space. It connects the site’s legacy as North Carolina’s first mental health facility to its future as a destination for wellness, play and community connection.

The 18.5-acre play plaza is the largest adventure playground not just in the state, but all of the Southeastern United States. It was custom designed with play features inspired by North Carolina’s natural landscapes, including climbing towers, boulders, and water play areas. It’s made for all ages, with places to climb, swing, and splash. There are lawns for picnics, oodles of picnic tables surrounding charcoal grills, a civic plaza, and a new grab-and-go market.

Made Possible by Public and Private Support

This kind of space doesn’t pop up overnight. It’s the result of years of planning, design, and investment.  Funding for the project includes:

  • 2022 Parks Bond: Approved by over 73% of voters, the bond designates $37 million for the Gipson Play Plaza
  • City Council Reserves: In November 2021, the City Council appropriated $12 million from capital reserves to initiate construction of the plaza
  • Dix Park Conservancy: The Dix Park Conservancy secured $26.5 million in private donations, including a transformational $10 million lead gift from Pat and Tom Gipson

Future Investment

The City’s proposed FY26 budget includes more than $11 million to support a major milestone at Dix Park as the campus transitions from state to city management with the relocation of DHHS. If approved, the funding will help maintain historic buildings and open grounds and begin clearing the way for future park spaces. These behind-the-scenes investments are key steps in bringing the long-term vision for Dix Park to life.

A Space for Everyone

The Gipson Play Plaza was built with everyone in mind. Whether you are a kid ready to climb, a grandparent out for a stroll, or someone looking for a new spot to picnic, there’s something here for everyone. This destination is designed for all Raleigh residents and visitors to enjoy.
