Mine Creek Greenway

Improvements

Project Overview

The existing Mine Creek Trail extends from Sawmill Road in North Raleigh, to the Crabtree Creek Trail. The Mine Creek Greenway was one of the original trails constructed within the Capital Area Greenway system. The section of Mine Creek Greenway included as part of this project extends from Shelley Lake, south to Crabtree Creek Greenway, near North Hills Drive. The proposed improvements include upgrades to the trail to meet current design and construction standards and address the needs of the public. Specifically, improvements include trail resurfacing and widening, drainage enhancements, improved community access, safety enhancements for at-grade crossings, pavement markings, and pedestrian bridge replacement.

Planning

This project does not include a Master Plan phase.

Design

The project engineer, Dewberry Engineers, Inc., has completed the schematic design for improvements to the trail corridor.

Two public engagement meetings were held in early June 2025 to allow the public to review the proposed improvements. View the Resources section below to see the information presented at the public engagement meetings. The Schematic Design was presented and approved by the City Council at their meeting on October 7, 2025.

Priority areas for trail improvements include bridge replacement, accessibility, improving trail safety, and trail resurfacing. The consultant is in the final phase of design and permitting, which will be complete by the end of 2026, with construction estimated to begin in Spring of 2027.
