Station three at night

New Fire Station 3 Set to Open

The facility is at 936 Rock Quarry Road

Raleigh Fire Station 3 has a new home! The City constructed a modernized facility to house Fire Station 3 at 936 Rock Quarry Road. The new building is 11,105 square feet and set to open on April 27. The old station, about 1.7 miles away on South East Street, will close that same day. Fire Station 3 provides services to residents in Southeast Raleigh.

The new $11.5-million station houses a fire engine with a total of 12 firefighters. It has a private patient evaluation room and a decontamination room. That’s a designated space where firefighters can remove hazardous contaminants from their skin and gear, preventing the spread of toxins into living areas. The building also has an exercise room and firefighter living quarters.

The station has electric charging capabilities for passenger vehicles and fire apparatus. Fire Station 3 is scheduled to house the City’s first electric fire engine. The Raleigh Fire Department hopes to be able to purchase an EV fire truck within the next few years.

“The opening of the new Raleigh Fire Station 3 represents not just a new building, but a strong, responsive force dedicated to protecting the lives and property of our community," said Fire Chief Herbert Griffin. "This state-of-the-art facility will provide our firefighters with modernized technology and EV capacity.”

Unique station

history walk at the station

Fire Station 3 has a rich history and a deep connection to the Victor Company.

It was Raleigh’s first volunteer black fire company, serving the community for decades. The company operated in the building that became the original Fire Station 3.

The new station honors that history with an outdoor public art installation created by Maxwell Emcays. It features a lighted “history walk” of the fire department milestones going back to the first volunteer fire companies. The artist consulted with Raleigh Fire and the Raleigh Fire Museum to ensure the accuracy and comprehensiveness of the piece’s historical information.

Community Input

RFD Station 3

In the fall of 2024, Raleigh Fire held an open house at a nearby community center to discuss the relocation of the station, and to educate community members and answer any questions. The department also unveiled the station and public art designs at the meeting.

Community Open House Planned

We plan to hold a community open house at the new station soon. Keep an eye out for information. You’ll have a chance to tour the station and learn about our work and equipment.
