Fire Station 3: Celebrating the Past, Making Way for the Future

Retired Raleigh Fire Captain Steve Wilson describes Station 3 as special. He should know. Wilson was based at the station three times during his 30-year career with the Raleigh Fire Department.

“The thing about this place, it always felt like home. People here are like family,” said Wilson.

That’s why Wilson and dozens of other active and retired Raleigh firefighters showed up to celebrate the station before it closes in early 2026. (Keep an eye out for more information about the new station location.)

Opened in 1951, Station 3 is the oldest operating fire station in the City. It’s also the smallest … and the busiest!

“I saw a lot of action here,” said Wilson. “I never got bored. I was always on the go!”

Assistant Fire Chief Danny Poole who spent two years of his career at the station on East Street, says the new Station 3 will provide a much-needed up-to-date facility for firefighters.

“I grew up in downtown, and this station has always been part of the fabric of Raleigh,” Poole said. “It’s sad to say goodbye, but it’s time. We need to build for the future.”

Attendees of the celebration gathered inside the fire station.
