Have an old computer and want to make a difference? One local organization is giving computers to Raleigh families without technology access – and you can help!
Last December, the City of Raleigh awarded Kramden Institute a grant to expand their work for Raleigh residents. Kramden is a Triangle-area nonprofit that wipes and refurbishes computers of all brands and ages and distributes them at no or very low cost to K-12 students and eligible adults and seniors. Since 2003, Kramden has refurbished and awarded more than 67,000 computers to disadvantaged students and families across North Carolina, and kept more than three million pounds of e-waste out of landfills.
Through the City of Raleigh’s Impact Partner Grant, Kramden has been able to organize four e-waste drives in different parts of Raleigh to encourage locals to donate their computers for re-use. Kramden handles the data security and refurbishment of the computers and then ensures they are given to individuals who need them. Kramden is hoping to collect at least 300 devices from each collection event to refurbish and donate to Raleigh residents.
The Impact Partner Grant is an annual City of Raleigh award that supports non-profits to pursue pilots for a sustainable and prosperous Raleigh. Six impressive organizations are chosen each year to pilot a new program through the grant, and to receive additional training and support from the City.
