Council Debates Teen Curfew Ordinance

Ordinance is aimed at improving teen safety

The Raleigh City Council today heard a proposed teen curfew ordinance.

The proposal restricts teens under the age of 18 from public spaces between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. The curfew is intended to improve youth protection and public safety. It also gives parents a tool for keeping teens safe.

Staff from the City Attorney’s office referred to similar ordinances in Charlotte, Fayetteville, Rocky Mount and Winston-Salem. It includes exceptions for employment, school, religious activities, emergencies and other situations.

The City Council will reconsider the ordinance at a later meeting to give the public an opportunity to comment. The ordinance will tentatively return at the Sept. 15 meeting, following public comment sessions on Sept. 8 and 15.
