Update on the Six Forks Road Improvement Project

City Council changed direction on Tuesday on the project to widen Six Forks Road. Instead of adding lanes and a multi-modal path, the Council directed staff to make improvements along the corridor and redirect the remaining funds to other projects.

The discussion came after staff presented alternatives to the project, which currently lacks adequate funding due to significant increases in land and construction costs along the corridor.

City Council voted to reduce the proposed project scope and approved the following:

  • Closing the 500-foot sidewalk gap along the front of Carroll Middle School;
  • New signalized pedestrian crossing between Northbrook and Northwood;
  • New signal at North Glen;
  • Intersection improvements at Millbrook;
  • Fund the design of a multi-modal bridge in Midtown;
  • Complete remainder of the Lake Wheeler Road Project, and;
  • Deliver the remainder of the Barwell Road Project.

Any leftover funds could help fund an estimated gap on the Old Wake Forest Road and Dixie Forest Road Improvement Project.

This is the second time City Staff has addressed City Council regarding this project. In February 2024, Raleigh City Council directed a rescoping of the project. The rescoping cut the original project scope, which extended from Rowan Street to Lynn Road, and revised it to Rowan Street to Millbrook Road. The modified project was estimated at $56.1 million in 2023 and had grown to an estimated cost of $93.5 million.
