Changes Coming to Public Comment Period Schedule, Phone Number

Public comments period changes go into effect on Sept. 12

This news article is more than a year old.

The public comment period at Raleigh City Council meetings will change after the Council’s summer break. The changes will go into effect for the Sept. 12 meeting. In addition, the telephone number you can use to leave a public comment through a voice mail message will change to a toll-free number beginning on Sept. 7 in preparation for the Sept. 12 Council meeting.

When Can I Speak During Public Comment Period?

Starting Sept. 12, residents will be able to speak during the public comment period on:

  • Second Tuesday of the month starting at 7 p.m.
  • Third Tuesday of the month – meeting starts at 1 p.m. (no change)

Telephone Number Change

Raleigh residents can also leave public comments remotely via voicemail to the City Council, and several of the City’s boards and commissions will have the option to use the feature in the future.

The telephone number to call to leave a voicemail will be: 855-925-2801. The City Council and each board and commission that chooses to use the voicemail function will have an individual four-digit code you need to input after dialing the main number. To leave a public comment for the City Council, call 855-925-2801 and enter code 3362.

For City Council meetings, voicemails are accepted between 5 p.m. Thursday and 5 p.m. Monday before a Tuesday Council meeting. You can leave one voicemail per meeting and the limit for these public comments is three minutes.

Public comments remotely submitted will be transcribed and become part of public record. Comments will be posted to BoardDocs 30 minutes prior to the City Council meeting.

More information on using voicemail with boards and commissions is scheduled to be available later this fall.
