School and Group Individuals and Families Self-Guided Nature

In her will, Dr. Annie Louise Wilkerson required that her 157-acre farm be set aside as a nature preserve for the primary purpose of nature study, wildlife education, and research into methods of conservation. This guides our development of educational programming at the preserve and compels us to follow a "leave no trace" ethic in our programs and activities. We are all about helping groups and individuals foster a connection with the natural world through public, group, and self-guided programs.

School and Group

Let us design a nature program for your group that meets your needs and fits our park mission.  Our 60 to 90-minute programs include topics such as biomes/habitats, bird study, earth science, insects, mammal study, nature play, reptiles, amphibians, and much more.  There is a minimum of 5 students to book a program, and a maximum of 50 students per day, split into smaller learning groups.  To learn more or to book a program, contact Bonnie Eamick at 919-996-4765 or bonnie.eamick@raleighnc.gov

Explorer backpack kits are available for free on a first-come, first-served basis whenever the park is open.

Explorer backpacks, woodland village backpacks, an art backpack, binoculars, kites, and a sadbox kit are available for free on a first-come, first-served basis whenever the park is open.

Scouts, homeschools, hiking clubs, and other groups are welcome to use the preserve for self-guided studies.

Please make sure to:

  • Call the park before you bring your group here to find out if the facilities are being used by park staff or another group.
  • Stay on park trails and follow park rules.
  • Leave no trace of your visit.
  • Let park staff know ahead of time if you are planning to check out any of our free nature study equipment.
