Solar Program Helps Make Energy Bills More Affordable

Dozens of Raleigh residents on a fixed income received rooftop solar systems.

Longtime Raleigh resident Wanda Statum is on a fixed income and admittedly sometimes struggles with her monthly bills.

That’s where solar energy comes into the picture.

Statum was one of nearly a dozen residents who qualified for a pilot program run by the City of Raleigh. As part of the Solarize the Triangle campaign, the one-year pilot program is providing free rooftop solar systems for these homeowners.

This supports the City's ongoing efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 80 percent by 2050, to address equity and environmental justice, and to build community resilience to the impacts of climate change. It will also lower the electricity bills of participating homeowners and renters by installing solar PV systems on their rooftops.

Raleigh is working with the Central Pines Regional Council on this program and Yes Solar, to do the installations.

Watch Statum talk about the program’s impact on her life in a new video!
