Mitchell is a special advisor with McAdams, a land planning and design company. He provides advisory services in urban planning, parks, and public space planning. He is also a professor of practice at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. He is an award-winning planner with over 40 years of experience and is internationally recognized for his leadership and contributions to contemporary planning issues.
He is a prolific public speaker specializing in urban planning, placemaking, and implementation strategies. Before joining McAdams, Mitchell served as the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation commissioner, chief planning officer, and planning director in Raleigh, NC, and president of the American Planning Association and the American Institute of Certified Planners.
Mitchell earned a bachelor’s degree in architecture from Pratt Institute and a master's degree in urban planning from Hunter College. He received an honorary doctor of humanities from William Peace University.
His hobbies include running and photography. Mitchell is married to his wife Mary and has three children and seven grandchildren.
