About the Artwork
A temporary public art piece by artist Patrizia Ferreira that invites the viewer to slow down and reflect upon the state of our environment, the beauty around us, and how to best preserve it. Made entirely of plastic bags, many found at one of Walnut Creek Preserve regular clean ups, is an homage to the handmade, to the slow work of artisanal communities across the world, to the power of collaborations and the infinite diversity of natural life. Air Chrysalis is made of 415 plastic bags, a net base, twine, and yarn. It measures: 6.6ft x 20ft
Patrizia worked with dozens of volunteers and led community workshops to create the artwork. You can read an article about one of the workshops here.
Air Chrysalis was made with the support of the following organizations: Raleigh Arts, Walnut Creek Wetland Park, Artspace, and Arts Access
About the Artist
Patrizia’s work laboriously incorporates the debris of her surroundings namely, textiles and plastic, to create poetic pieces that speak of our society of over consumption, and the state of our environment. By giving life to otherwise inanimate materials, making something beautiful out of the discarded she invites the viewer to reflect upon the repercussions our actions cause on our planet. A native of Uruguay, being an immigrant and being a woman instruments in great part her work. She received a BA in textile design from the Institute of Industrial Design in Uruguay and an MS in textile design for prints from Philadelphia University. She is an artist and educator living in Cary, NC.
