Andy MacKenzie
Andy is currently the Studio Manager at the Sertoma Arts Center and its sister site the Pullen Arts Center. He graduated with an MFA from Fontbonne University in St. Louis, and has been an ceramic educator for the past 30 years. He began working on the potters wheel during his freshman year of college and has been addicted to the process of creating work this way ever since. He specializes in the difficult process of crystalline glazes on fine porcelain.
Artist Statement
While working with crystalline glazes can be frustrating and challenging, I enjoy the loss of control. Each firing, the pots are offered up to the kiln gods and sometimes they smile on the work and the crystals grow in interesting ways across the forms. I find that I am so eager to look into a cooling kiln to see what might have occurred that I risk being singed by the heat of the firing. Each firing is a risk and I like that I don't have complete control over the results.
