Design Update:
During the survey of the intersection, we discovered that the existing curb ramps and traffic circle would interfere with each other. Moving the curb ramps isn't possible because of nearby catch basins and other utilities. As a result, the traffic circle has been removed from the plans, and the intersection at S State St and Bragg St will remain an all-way stop.

Other Considerations:

  • Speed Cushions: Speed cushions are planned for S State St between Peterson St and Bragg St. These will be built at the same time as other work, which will extend the area with traffic calming from Martin Luther King Jr Blvd to Peterson St (originally just planned for Martin Luther King Jr Blvd to Bragg St).
  • Route 5 Upgrades: Route 5 has been upgraded to a frequent service route, with buses running every 15 minutes in each direction. While traffic circles are designed to work with buses, they can affect how well the buses move through the area. To reduce this impact, staff is focusing on using speed cushions as the best option for slowing traffic along routes with frequent bus service.
