Scooter Parking Corrals in Glenwood South Get an Exciting Upgrade

Last week, Transportation began improving the 13 existing scooter parking corrals along the Glenwood South corridor between Peace Street and Hillsborough Street.

Originally launched in October 2021 as a pilot, these corrals resulted in a high compliance rate for Lime and Spin scooter trips, meaning most rides ended in the designated corral areas for the duration of the pilot (October 2021 – June 2022). During the pilot, geofencing technology, in-app parking guidance, and financial penalties for improper parking were implemented to promote compliance.

The new upgrades will build on the pilot's success by continuing to use geofencing technology while also bringing about some enhancements, including parking signage, wheel stops, and vibrant painted designs to make the parking spots even more visible. Research shows that combining clear markings with smart technology (in-app geofencing) improves parking compliance, and some corrals will also feature bike racks to accommodate cyclists.

A Creative Solution to a Common Problem
Originally designed to tackle poor scooter parking, the Glenwood South corrals repurpose spaces where regular parking is prohibited—for example, near fire hydrants and intersections—enhancing safety and visibility for all. Building on the success of this pilot, we’re excited to explore innovative upgrades based on best practices from other cities.

This project not only tests new materials and designs but also draws inspiration from New York City’s vibrant Asphalt Art projects. As we progress, we’ll be experimenting with different colors and materials, learning what works best for future projects.

Looking Ahead
We’re confident that these updates will continue to improve the experience for residents and visitors alike. As we move forward, we will remain open to your feedback and input. While we’ll be conducting formal feedback opportunities once the installation is complete, in the meantime, you can reach out to Hannah Dos Santos with any questions or feedback.

Transportation staff expect the upgrades to all 13 corrals to be completed by the end of this year.

Stay tuned for more updates as this project moves ahead!
