New Raised Crosswalks Improve Safety on St. Mary’s Street

New Broughton crosswalk

Two raised crosswalks on St. Mary’s Street, near Clay Street and Brooklyn Street, are now complete, with final road pavement markings applied in February. This initiative, which began last year during the resurfacing of St. Mary’s, enhances pedestrian safety.

New Broughton Crosswalk

Raised crosswalks are an effective traffic calming measure with several key benefits:

  • The ramp leading up to the crosswalk helps reduce vehicle speeds.
  • The raised height makes pedestrians more visible to drivers.
  • The crosswalks are flush with the sidewalk, improving accessibility for individuals with mobility challenges, such as those using strollers or wheelchairs.

Studies show that raised crosswalks can reduce pedestrian crashes by up to 45%, significantly improving safety for everyone.

The crosswalks are in a walkable area near Broughton High School, Fred Fletcher Park, a GoRaleigh bus stop, and downtown amenities. These popular destinations all contribute to the high pedestrian traffic in the area.

This pilot raised crosswalk project has been a success, and Vision Zero plans to implement similar traffic-calming measures at additional locations throughout downtown. In collaboration with the Raleigh Fire Department, they have ensured that emergency vehicles would still be able to navigate the area effectively, further enhancing safety for all.

Vision Zero is a citywide initiative focused on reducing and ultimately eliminating serious injuries and fatalities in the transportation network, while fostering safe, healthy, and equitable mobility for all.
