New Flashing Beacon Improves Pedestrian Safety at Lake Wheeler Road

Lake Wheeler Road

A new Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon (RRFB) has been installed at the intersection of Lake Wheeler Road and Goode Street, making the area safer for pedestrians. This location is especially busy because it’s near the State Farmers Market, Healing Transitions, and a popular Route 21 bus stop.

The RRFB system includes two bright, rectangular LED lights that flash rapidly when a pedestrian presses the button. These flashing lights warn drivers that someone is crossing, helping to improve safety and encourage cautious driving. According to the Federal Highway Administration, RRFBs can lower the risk of pedestrian crashes by 50%.

This project also includes a highly visible crosswalk and a pedestrian refuge island, allowing people to cross one lane at a time. The entire installation meets ADA standards, ensuring accessibility for everyone.

This improvement is part of the Vision Zero initiative, which aims to prevent serious injuries and deaths on city streets. Vision Zero and GoRaleigh continue working together to improve safety in areas with high bus ridership, making transportation safer and more reliable for the community.

More RRFBs will be installed at other crosswalks near busy transit stops as part of ongoing efforts to protect pedestrians.

Vision Zero is a citywide program dedicated to creating a safer, healthier, and more fair transportation system for all. To learn more, visit the Vision Zero program page.
