New Crosswalk Lights Make Walks to School Safer in Raleigh

Jeffrey’s Grove Elementary gets pedestrian safety upgrade

The City of Raleigh has installed new Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFBs) at the crosswalk on Jeffery’s Grove School Road near the entrance of Jeffrey’s Grove Elementary School. RRFBs are pedestrian-activated flashing lights designed to grab drivers’ attention and increase yielding rates at crosswalks. When a pedestrian presses the activation button, bright, rapidly flashing yellow lights turn on, signaling to drivers that someone is crossing.

This installation is part of a broader effort to create safer, more accessible routes for students and families walking to school. According to the Federal Highway Administration, RRFBs can increase motorist yielding rates to as high as 98%, significantly reducing the risk to pedestrians. By complementing the existing school speed zone, these beacons reinforce safe driving behavior and ensure drivers remain alert in this high-traffic area.

While these upgrades directly improve safety for students and families, they also benefit the broader neighborhood by making local streets safer and more walkable for everyone. Whether walking to school or simply out for a stroll, these enhancements contribute to a more connected and pedestrian-friendly community.

This project is part of Raleigh’s larger Vision Zero initiative, which is committed to eliminating traffic-related deaths and serious injuries by creating a safer, more equitable transportation network.
