All new recruits complete a recruit academy (about 32 weeks) conducted at the Keeter Training Center which includes both intense physical training and a challenging academic program.

Recruits are required to maintain a minimum 70 percent average, recruits receive several certifications before graduation and their assignment to a fire station (EMT, Firefighter I and II, Haz-Mat Operations Plus).

Traditional Academy

Fire Academy Students

Fire Academy Students

For those with zero experience and those with experience but not yet certified, we will run a 7-month traditional academy.  This traditional academy will certify the individuals to the levels required and will prepare them to perform the required duties of a firefighter safely, effective, and efficiently.

Note: This year we will not have practice sessions for the written aptitude test or the physical agility test due to COVID-19 precautions.

Abbreviated Academy

For those individuals already certified NC EMT or National Registered EMT, NC Firefighter I & II, and NC HazMat Level 1, we will be running a shortened 2-month academy.

Those individuals that are certified to the equivalent fire certifications in another state must request for reciprocity with NC Office of the State Fire Marshall who states,  “Reciprocity or Equivalent Credit will only be granted for certifications that are accredited by either the International Fire Service Accreditation (IFSAC) or the National Board on Fire Service Professional Qualifications (Pro-Board).”

It is important to note that proof of NC certifications must be submitted electronically with your application to be eligible for the abbreviated academy.  Those who are not certified to all levels are still candidates for the traditional academy.

Note: This year we will not have practice sessions for the written aptitude test or the physical agility test due to COVID-19 precautions.
