The Evidence Unit receives and securely stores all found property and evidence. It is open to the public to reclaim their lost or stolen items after they have been released by the investigating officer or detective.

Reclaiming Property

When you receive a notification letter that your property is ready to pick up, you must

  • Come in person
  • Produce a photocopy of identification such as a driver's license

The unit releases property on Tuesdays and Thursdays by appointment only. If you do not reclaim your property within 180 days of the letter of notification, the department will dispose of it in accordance with governing legislation or court order.

Reclaiming a Firearm (Out-of-State Residents)

If you are attempting to reclaim a firearm currently in our custody and you do not reside in North Carolina, please review the following important information:

1. Firearm Return Process

Federal law prohibits the direct transfer of a firearm to an individual who resides in another state. As a result, if you live outside of North Carolina, you have two options for reclaiming your firearm:

  • Option 1: Arrange for the firearm to be shipped from our custody to a Federal Firearms License (FFL) dealer in your state.
  • Option 2: Contact your local law enforcement agency to determine if they are able to conduct a courtesy release on your behalf.

2. Costs and Fees

Please note the following:

  • You will be responsible for all shipping costs associated with transferring the firearm to your chosen FFL or law enforcement agency.
  • Most FFLs charge a service fee for processing and releasing firearms back to their lawful owners.
  • Payment for these services must be arranged directly between you and the receiving FFL or agency.

3. Required Documentation

Before the firearm can be released or shipped, you must provide:

  • Proof of ownership;
  • Valid government-issued photo identification; and,
  • Documentation from the receiving FFL or law enforcement agency authorizing the transfer or release.

Our staff will work with you to verify ownership and coordinate the proper release or shipment of your firearm.
