No matter how you choose to spend the winter holiday season, make sure to be fire safe. Your decorations, tree, lights and cooking all bring hazards. There are some easy things you can do to help prevent a house fire.

Christmas Tree Safety

Christmas Tree Fire.

As you deck the halls this holiday season, be fire smart. A small fire that spreads to a Christmas tree can grow large very quickly.

Keep Tree away from heat

Make sure your tree is at least three feet away from any heat source, like an airduct, fireplace or space heater.

Examine Cords

Examine extension cords and lights for signs of damage. Frayed electric cords should be discarded.

Inspect Lights

Carefully inspect all electrical decorations before you use them. Cracked or damaged sockets and/or loose or exposed wires can cause serious shock or start a fire.

Trim the Stump

Trim the tree's stump by at least two inches on freshly cut trees. Allow it to absorb water for 24 hours before bringing it inside.

Keep the Tree Watered

Fill the water reservoir daily and check the condition of the trunk bark and branches for moisture. Shedding or dry needles could mean the tree is drying out, increasing overall fire risks.

  • Stay in the kitchen while you are frying, grilling, or broiling food. If you leave the kitchen for even a short period of time, turn off the stove.
  • If you are simmering, baking, roasting, or boiling food, check it regularly, remain in the home while food is cooking, and use a timer to remind you that you are cooking.

  • Replace any string of lights with worn or broken cords or loose bulb connections. Read manufacturer’s instructions for number of light strands to connect.
  • Use clips, not nails, to hang lights so the cords do not get damaged. Keep decorations away from windows and doors.

Before Heading Out or To Bed

Blow out lit candles when you leave the room or go to bed. Turn off all light strings and decorations before leaving home or going to bed.
