RFD Springs to Action to Install Smoke Alarms at Resident's Home

Smoke alarms cut the risk of death from home fires in half.

The Raleigh Fire Department’s mission is to keep our community safe. Recently, they were quick to act after learning a local resident could use help with smoke alarms.

“They were there in less than an hour after I called,” said Lanny Harer, who contacted RFD for his friend, retired Superior Court Judge Howard Manning Jr. Harer was concerned about the lack of working smoke alarms at his friend’s house.

Studies show working smoke alarms can cut the risk of death from home fires in half.

Capt. Chris Benvenuto, Senior Firefighter Brittany Rountree, and Firefighter Andrew Martin stopped by Manning’s resident and installed three new smoke alarms.

“Smoke alarms that are properly installed and maintained play a vital role in reducing fire deaths and injuries,” Benvenuto said. “So helping residents with smoke alarms is a high priority for us.”

The smoke alarms RFD installs provide up to 10 years of continuous service (they use power cells instead of traditional batteries).

The RFD team also gave Manning their home station’s (Fire Station 6) phone number and encouraged him to call if he needs help.

Benvenuto advises all residents to check their smoke alarms every time we turn clocks back or forward.

Harer said he appreciates RFD’s quick action and care. “This was fantastic customer and community service,” he said.
