What We Do Community Partnerships Contact and Engagement

The TRACE Unit (Transit, Recon, and Community Engagement) is a specialized unit within the Raleigh Police Department, under the department's newly formed Hospitality District. This unit is dedicated to enhancing safety, visibility, and community partnerships in Downtown Raleigh.

Originally established in 2015 as the Transit Squad, the unit was created to maintain a consistent law enforcement presence at the GoRaleigh Transit Mall. As Raleigh’s downtown landscape has grown and evolved, so has the mission of the unit.

Today, the TRACE Unit reflects a modern, proactive approach to policing – focused not only on transit safety, but also on broader public safety and quality of life throughout the Central Business District.

What We Do

TRACE officers are highly visible and actively engaged in the community, working to:

  • Provide a consistent police presence in Downtown Raleigh
  • Ensure safety and security at transit hubs and surrounding areas
  • Conduct proactive patrols throughout the Central Business District
  • Respond quickly to incidents and quality-of-life concerns
  • Build relationships with residents, visitors, and local businesses

The unit utilizes a combination of foot patrol, bike patrol, and transit-focused enforcement strategies to remain accessible and responsive.

Community Partnerships

Collaboration is at the core of the TRACE Unit’s mission. Officers work closely with community stakeholders, including organizations like the Downtown Raleigh Alliance, to address ongoing concerns and support a safe, welcoming downtown environment.

Through these partnerships, TRACE officers are able to proactively identify issues, coordinate solutions, and strengthen trust within the community.

A Modern Approach to Public Safety

The TRACE Unit represents a forward-thinking model of policing – one that prioritizes visibility, responsiveness, and engagement. By combining traditional enforcement with strong community connections, the unit plays a critical role in supporting the continued growth and vibrancy of Downtown Raleigh.

Contact and Engagement

Community members and businesses in Downtown Raleigh are encouraged to engage with TRACE officers during patrols or through the Raleigh Police Department for non-emergency concerns, partnership opportunities, or safety initiatives.
