RPD Crossing Guard Celebrates 19 Years of Service

As Black History Month comes to an end, the Raleigh Police Department recognizes Mrs. Sharon Reid, a dedicated crossing guard with the City of Raleigh since 2007. She has proudly served the community for nearly two decades. Her journey began at Millbrook Elementary School after the previous crossing guard passed away. The school principal, recognizing Mrs. Reid’s reliability and passion for service, asked if she would be interested in taking on the role. Mrs. Reid immediately accepted, not realizing how meaningful this position would become in her life.

Throughout her career, Mrs. Reid has built strong relationships with students, parents, and school staff. She takes great pride in creating a safe and welcoming environment for children each day. Known for her warm presence, consistency, and genuine care, she has made a lasting impact on the community. When she first began, Mrs. Reid was the youngest crossing guard on staff and eagerly learned from her more experienced colleagues, carrying those lessons with her as she grew into a respected and trusted figure within the program.

Mrs. Reid has served at multiple schools and has successfully handled some of the most challenging crossing guard assignments in the city. Her work requires focus, patience, and resilience—qualities she demonstrates each day. Her commitment to being there for her students, regardless of obstacles, reflects her strong work ethic and sense of responsibility to the community. Being recognized for her service is both humbling and overwhelming, and she remains grateful for the opportunity to make a lasting difference in the lives of so many families.

“It's a blessing to get up every morning and see the smiles on these kids' faces and the conversations with the kids' parents. I just love working with the kids. Kids have been my passion all of my life, and it's truly an honor to be here 19 years later,” she said.

Beyond her role as a crossing guard, Mrs. Reid is a devoted wife and mother of two sons, who are incredibly proud of her service and dedication. She credits her faith, the support of her family, and the encouragement of her supervisors and colleagues for enabling her to continue serving for so many years.
