The Raleigh Police Department is proud to celebrate Officer Walker for his continued dedication to the students and staff of Athens Drive Magnet High School.
On February 11, school leaders, students, and RPD representatives gathered at the school’s main entrance for a special recognition ceremony honoring Officer Walker’s service and impact. The celebration, coordinated in partnership with Wake County Public School System Communications, took place just before the school’s lunch period – a fitting time to recognize the officer who spends his days building relationships in hallways, classrooms, and cafeterias.
As a School Resource Officer, Officer Walker’s role extends far beyond safety and security. He serves as a mentor, a trusted adult, and a steady presence on campus. Whether offering guidance, supporting school initiatives, or simply taking time to connect with students.
“It is an absolutely tremendous honor to be a part of this and honor what an SRO does each and every day. His impact is enormous, and these students get to see that each and every day,” Heidi Lawrence, with Wake County Public Schools, shared.
The recognition highlights the strong collaboration between the Raleigh Police Department and Wake County Public Schools – a partnership built on shared goals of student safety, mentorship, and positive engagement.
“We are very pleased to share Officer Walker with Athens Drive High School. Every positive interaction he has with students strengthens the department's relationship with the future leaders of this city,” said RPD Major E. Goodwin.
Officer Walker expressed that he was completely taken by surprise.
“When I walked into the room and saw all the kids I've come to know over the years, it was truly shocking. I’m not just an officer to them; I’m someone they can trust and turn to whenever they have problems. That’s an incredibly humbling feeling for me. I care about them, and today it’s clear that they care about me too,” said Walker.
The Raleigh Police Department congratulates Officer Walker on this well-deserved honor and thanks Athens Drive Magnet High School for its continued partnership in supporting Raleigh’s youth.
