Year 2016 | Landmarks Located beside Lake Johnson Pool and behind Athens Drive High School

The Thomas G Crowder Woodland Center was opened in October 2016. The focus of the center is on nature education and fitness. The facility offers a number of nature and fitness programs for all ages. Via Lake Johnson you can access three miles of paved greenway trails and two miles of unpaved trails.

Open daily from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., 8 p.m., or 9 p.m. (depending on the month)

Registration may be done online at reclink.raleighnc.gov or in person at a staffed City of Raleigh recreation site during regular business hours.

Amenities

Access to Greenway and Park Trails

Get direct access to Park's trail system a short 15 minute walk from the Waterfront Program Center.

QR Fit Trail

Six stations, found on the west side of the park, cover approximately a one mile loop where patrons can stop and use their smart phones' QR reader app to access short videos that lead one through specific types of exercises.

Patrons can now easily combine upper body, core, flexibility and lower body exercises with walking or running.

Nature Preserve

  • Lake Johnson has a dual park designation as half a metro park and half as a Nature Preserve. You can access the Nature Preserve portions of the park located on the south end of the park, from the Thomas G. Crowder Woodland Center through the park’s trail system.
  • Come site out on our back deck and observe the birds that come to the feeders located on the bird’s nest

Park Rules

  • Swimming/wading is not allowed
  • All dogs must be under control and on a leash at all times. Pet owners must clean up after their pet, waste bags are available in the park
  • Bank fishing is not allowed, fish only from boats and the pedestrian bridge at Waterfront Program Center – all N.C. fishing regulations apply
  • Alcohol is not allowed
  • Smoking is only permitted in the parking lot
  • Hammocking is not allowed except on designated posts (see park map for locations)
  • Drones are not allowed without a permit from the Special Events Office at 919-996-2200
  • Collecting, removing, or introducing plants or animals of any kind is not allowed
  • Biking is allowed only on the paved greenway and the woodchip trail leading to the boardwalk at the headwaters of the lake
  • Please stay on designated trails
  • All City of Raleigh Ordinances apply

Rental Information

  • To begin rental process, please complete the Rental Inquiry Form and submit it to the site’s Rental Coordinator either in person or via email to LJWoodlandCtr@raleighnc.gov. Submission does not guarantee reservation.
  • All complete inquiry forms are processed in the order that they are received. Please allow 5 business days for forms to be processed. Incomplete forms will not be processed.

  • It is recommended to review the TGC Woodland Center Indoor Facility Rules prior to submitting a rental inquiry form.

Indoor Rental Spaces

Dogwood Room

  • $80/hour (2-hour minimum)
  • Max Capacity: 95 people
  • Dimensions: 42’ x 32’
  • This spacious room features a beautiful vaulted ceiling with a floor-to-ceiling view of the park
  • Audio-visual equipment includes a mounted projector, screen, speakers, and microphones

Lady's Slipper Room

  • $65/hour (2-hour minimum)
  • Max Capacity: 30 people
  • Dimensions: 24’ x 26’
  • An ideal classroom or meeting space for smaller groups.
  • Audio-visual equipment includes: HDTV monitor

Outdoor Rentable Spaces

Deck

  • $35/hour (2-hour minimum)
  • Max Capacity: 95 people
  • Dimensions: 42’ x 25’
  • Easily accessible from either main room, this space offers shade, stunning views, and fresh air.

Birds Nest 

  • $35/hour (2-hour minimum)
  • Max Capacity: 15 people
  • Dimensions: 13’ x 12’
  • Walk among the trees with this deck extension.

Indoor Rental Additions

  • Warming Kitchen ($25/hour): Drop-down dividers open to provide convenient access to both the Dogwood and Lady’s Slipper room.
    • Includes a refrigerator, freezer, stove, microwave, and counter space.
    • May only be rented in conjunction with a meeting space rental
  • Gallery ($30/hour): This hall offers additional space to set up tables or allow your groups to mingle
    • May only be rented in conjunction with both the Dogwood and Lady’s Slipper Room rental.

Additional Fees and Information

Required Fee

  • $15 non-refundable application fee
  • $40 Setup/Cleanup fee
  • $100 Refundable Damage Deposit Fee

Optional Fees

  • $25 Audio-visual equipment fee
  • $40 After-hours Fee
    • Fee applies only to hours outside of normal operational hours
    • A portion of the rental most occurs during normal operational hours and may end by 10 p.m.
  • $100 Alcohol Permit Fee 
    • Alcohol only permitted with an approved permit. Permit only allows for the consumption of beer, wine, and champagne. No spirits or liquors.
    • Consumption of alcohol only permitted in rented spaces.
    • Alcohol permits must be submitted and paid for at least 21 business days prior to the event for approval. Submission does not guarantee approval of the permit.
