Pender Street Park

Acres 0.09

Pender Street Park is a small park in the College Park neighborhood of East Raleigh.  This park is known by many in the neighborhood as “John Stokes Garden.”

Beloved community member John Stokes lived near the current park site.  For many years, this was an unmaintained lot, overgrown with weeds.  John Stokes worked hand in hand with residents of the College Park community to clear the land, remove trash, and transform it into a garden.  This was a true labor of love for Mr. Stokes, and neighbors remember him spending countless hours gardening and planting.  Mr. Stokes also led the effort to officially dedicate this site as a City of Raleigh park in the early 1980’s.

This park was renovated in 2022.  The renovated Pender Street Park features a short walkway, seatwalls, a small picnic area, and public art celebrating Mr. Stokes dedication to the community and this park.  The park also includes the new installation of trees, shrubs, ornamental grasses, and flowering perennials.  Landscape enhancements will continue over the coming years to establish the garden aesthetic.

Construction at this park was part of the Fisher Street Park relocation project and the East College Park development.
