Make Waves This Summer at Lake Johnson Park

Long days, warm weather, and calm water—there’s no better time to get out on the lake. 

This summer, Lake Johnson Park is offering a full lineup of paddling programs designed to help you explore, learn, and connect on the water—whether you’re picking up a paddle for the first time or looking to sharpen your skills.

All instructional programs include equipment and require advance registration. Paddle Tours start at $30 for Raleigh residents, while instructional programs such as Introduction to Paddling are $55 for residents, with additional options available.

Get outside, try something new, and experience Lake Johnson from a fresh perspective this summer.

Upcoming Programs

Adventure Awaits with Paddle Tours

Where experienced guides lead you across the lake to discover local wildlife, hidden history, and seasonal highlights. Looking for something extra memorable? Sunset (July 10) and full moon (Aug. 29) tours offer a chance to watch the lake transform in the evening light.

Dates: Third Sundays for SUP or Final Sundays for Kayaks
Times: 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. or 10 a.m - Noon.

Introduction to Paddling

Held on select Saturdays—SUP on the second Saturdays and kayak on the third Saturdays. These relaxed, hands-on classes will teach you the essentials, from basic strokes to water safety, all while enjoying Lake Johnson.

Times: 9:30 a.m. – Noon or 10 a.m.–12:30 p.m.

Family Kayak Skills 

Bring the whole crew for a Family Kayak where learning feels like play. Paddle side-by-side, tackle fun challenges, and build confidence together on the water. Adults can paddle solo or team up with younger participants in tandem kayaks, making it a perfect shared outdoor experience. You can also earn a Paddle Adventurer patch! An adult must accompany children 16 and under.

Times: 9:30 a.m. – Noon or 10 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

The Paddling Mastery Series

Ready to level up? Designed for those who already love being on the water and want more. These evening sessions focus on refining technique and building confidence through hands-on practice. Intermediate stand-up paddleboard classes take place on Wednesday, June 17 or July 22, with kayak options on Wednesday, June 24 or July 29. 

Advanced sessions follow in August, with stand-up paddleboard on Wednesday, Aug. 19, and kayak on Wednesday, Aug. 26. Participants should have prior experience and complete the prior level before advancing.

Paddle Club

For those who simply want to paddle and connect, meets on the third Thursday of each month. This laid-back, social paddle is perfect for sharing tips, meeting fellow enthusiasts, and enjoying the lake at your own pace. Bring your own gear or reserve equipment—either way, you’ll find a welcoming community waiting.

Times: 5:30 – 7:30 p.m
Ages: 10  and older
