Born to Heal: African Americans in Medicine Lecture

This lecture will explore African Americans in medicine in the 19^th and early 20^th centuries.

Dr. Chad Swanson, DO, MPH, and La’Cura Venable, MA, LPN, will discuss the history of St. Agnes Hospital and Dr. Lawson A. Scruggs and how Black medical practitioners broke barriers in the field of medicine despite racism and Jim Crow laws.

This program is supported in part by North Carolina Humanities the state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
