June 20's historic parade in Raleigh was the largest event ever held downtown. Just shy of 200,000 Carolina Hurricanes fans ventured to Hillsborough and Fayetteville streets to catch a glimpse of the Stanley Cup and the team as they celebrated their second-ever championship.
It was a peaceful and joyous day, and City staff helped to make it that way. From first responders from the Raleigh Police and Fire Departments to crews keeping the streets clean from Solid Waste Services, there was a lot to manage throughout the day.
Let’s take a look at the day, by the numbers:
- 3 – children safely reunited with their families
- 7 – trucks used to help collect trash and litter after the parade
- 7 – cubic yards of litter
- 10 – City employees dedicated to picking up litter after the parade
- 60 – trash cans emptied downtown
- 184 - Raleigh Police Department Officers (other agencies supplemented that number from State Capitol Police, North Carolina State Highway Patrol, Wake County Sheriff's Office, Apex Police Department, Cary Police Department, and Wake Forest Police Department)
- 4,000 – Rides in by bike & scooter (nearly four times our normal daily ridership!)
- At least 180,000– total attendees
And only two arrests: one for drunken and disorderly conduct, one for simple affray.
"I am incredibly proud of the many City employees who showed up to support this historic event,” said City Manager Marchell Adams-David. “From the detailed planning work before the event, to the exceptional crowd management the day of the parade, and through cleanup after, our team once again demonstrated that the City of Raleigh delivers high-quality services that keep our City safe, clean, and a great place to live, work, learn and PLAY. Go Canes!”
