On Saturday, Oct. 24, the City of Raleigh Solid Waste Services department hosted Shred and Dead, an event for residents to bring documents for shredding, dispose of eWaste and recycle technology items like laptops, cell phones, monitors, and batteries. It was the department’s first disposal event since before the pandemic. More than 350 residents participated at the drive thru, drop-off event at the Wilders Grove Solid Waste Services facility. Collection totals include:
- 12,000 pounds of paper
- 15 cubic yards of electronic waste
- 350 pounds of alkaline/lithium-ion batteries
- 18 desktop computers
- 70 laptop computers
- 30 tablets
- 72 cell phones
- 10 monitors
Solid Waste Services partnered with the Kramden Institute, which refurbishes old tech for use in their digital inclusion programs. Since 2003, Kramden has helped divert over 2.4 million pounds of e-waste from landfills and has awarded more than 70,000 computers to people in North Carolina.
Staff also distributed biodegradable paper yard waste bags and spoke with residents about the recent change to weekly yard waste pickup. Representatives from the Raleigh Fire Department were also on hand to discuss the importance of proper electronics charging during Fire Prevention Month.
Stay tuned for a similar event in Spring 2027!
