The Solid Waste Services Department proudly shares that the US Composting Council has awarded the Raleigh Yard Waste Center the 2023 Large-Scale Compost Manufacturer of the Year. The award recognizes a commercial compost facility that creates over 10,000 tons of output and displays excellence in compost production and distribution. Superintendent Tim Gainer accepted the award on behalf of his team at the Yard Waste Center.
Held in Daytona, FL, the Compost Conference had over 1,500 attendees from across the country dedicated to organics recycling to divert waste, build healthier soils, and grow local economies. The conference bolsters the growing industry through educational workshops, research presentations, and networking.
The City of Raleigh's Yard Waste Center produces about 50,000 cubic yards of organic compost, organic mulch, and dyed mulch from residential and commercial yard waste yearly. The organic compost and mulch are listed by the Organic Materials Review Institute (OMRI) and certified by the Seal of Testing Assurance (STA), meaning they are tested regularly, meet EPA regulations, and are suitable for organic agriculture and landscape applications. Homeowners, landscapers, general contractors, soil blenders, resellers, packaged soil products companies, the State Department of Transportation, and City Departments purchase and use their quality products.
This award exemplifies the hard work of our Yard Waste Center team and Solid Waste Services yard waste crews to divert reusable debris from landfills and into valuable resources.
