Applicant Eligibility Requirements
Firefighters are expected to think clearly, act quickly, and perform effectively during complex and dangerous emergencies. The six steps in our application process ensure every firefighter can respond safely and confidently when the community needs them most.
No previous firefighting experience is required. Applicants must:
- Be 18 or older by the time the application is closed
- Provide proof of a high school diploma or equivalent credential
- Have corrected vision of at least 20/30 in both eyes
- Hold a valid driver's license
- Meet the physical and mental demands of the position
Application Process
Step 1: Submit Your Application
Applicants can review the steps for the application process below. All applicants must visit the NEOGOV website and create an account. If you already have an account, sign in with your username and password, select the job title, and submit your application. Be sure to complete every section, including the supplemental questionnaire, and attach all required documents. If a question does not apply to you, enter NA. Questions marked with an asterisk are required.

Step 2: Pass the Physical Agility Test
Applicants must pass the Physical Agility Test (PAT)to be considered for selection. The PAT measures the strength, endurance, and coordination needed to perform essential firefighting duties.
Applicants are encouraged to prepare in advance to ensure safety and improve performance. With proper conditioning, most healthy and physically fit individuals can complete the test successfully. During testing, all procedures are explained clearly and demonstrated as needed.

Step 3: Complete and Pass the Written Aptitude Test
Applicants must complete and pass the Candidate Written Aptitude Test. This standardized exam measures essential skills needed for success in the fire service. No prior fire experience is required.
All qualified applicants are eligible to take the written test. After completing the exam, candidates will receive their results via email from NEOGOV. Those who pass will move on to the Physical Agility Test.
Retesting is not offered and scheduling changes cannot be accommodated.
Step 4: Pass the Oral Interview
Use the tips below to help you prepare for your oral interview:

Review the Raleigh Fire Department’s mission, values, and services. - Understand the role
Know the core duties and expectations of a Raleigh firefighter. - Practice interview questions
Prepare responses that show communication, problem‑solving, and commitment to service. - Use real examples
Highlight past experiences that demonstrate teamwork, leadership, and resilience. - Review your application
Be ready to discuss your background, certifications, and motivation. - Prepare thoughtful questions
Ask about training, station culture, or next steps in the hiring process. - Present yourself professionally
Arrive early, dress neatly, and communicate with confidence.
Step 5: Secure Your Final Offer!
All firefighter applicants who receive a contingent job offer are also required to pass a:
- criminal background check,
- driving background check,
- controlled substance test,
- medical exam; and,
- psychological evaluation.
Final job offers are contingent on candidates passing all steps.
Step 6: Complete the Training Academy and Probationary Period
After final offers are made, new firefighters begin an extensive training program at the City of Raleigh’s Keeter Fire Training Center. The Fire Academy includes EMS instruction, a rigorous physical fitness program, and multiple live-fire simulations designed to prepare recruits for real‑world emergency response.
To successfully complete the academy, each recruit must maintain a minimum classroom average of 70 percent. Recruits who do not meet this requirement are subject to dismissal.
