The City Celebrates The Cottages of Idlewild Groundbreaking

On Monday, the City of Raleigh joined community members, partners, and local leaders to break ground on the Cottages of Idlewild, a new affordable cottage court community being developed by Raleigh Area Land Trust (RALT).

The City donated the land on which the homes will be built and invested more than $1,260,000 in gap financing into the development in order to create and preserve affordability in the historic Idlewild neighborhood.

The celebration marked an exciting step forward in expanding affordable housing options in Raleigh. Speaking at the park named in his honor, Raleigh Raised Development co-founder LeVelle Moton shared his story of growing up nearby on Lane Street and what this development means to him.

The Cottages of Idlewild will bring 18 new homes to the Idlewild neighborhood, all affordable to households earning below 80% of the Area Median Income (AMI). Four homes will be rental units, and 14 homes will be for sale through a community land trust model. Through this model, these homes will remain affordable for 99+ years, preserving long-term housing stability for generations to come.

This project is a true community collaboration, with partners and funders including RALT, Raleigh Raised Development, Haven Design Build, the City of Raleigh, Wake County, North Carolina Housing Finance Agency, Coastal Credit Union, and more.

The City of Raleigh is proud to support this project, which reflects our shared vision of creating housing opportunities that strengthen neighborhoods and ensure Raleigh remains a place where all residents can thrive.

By continuing to invest in projects like this, the City is helping to solve the affordable housing puzzle, one piece at a time.
