Demolition activity is underway on the old police headquarters. Crews have removed the windows in the building, and last week, they started removing the tunnel that used to connect the two buildings. This work includes chipping away the flooring on the interior of the bridge. This is likely a noisy activity and may impact those who visit or work in the Raleigh Municipal Building (RMB). Crews are also building a protected walkway from the RMB side exit door to Hargett Street.
On January 23, teams are scheduled to start scraping the bricks off the building. Check back here next week for more information on this phase of the demolition process.

Last week, crews removed the tunnel between RMB and the old police HQ. They also finished the protected walkway from RMB's side exit doors.
This week, the team is installing dust screening to the parking deck to help mitigate some dust entering the parking deck while the demo is underway.
Starting Tuesday afternoon, the bricks will start coming off the building. A large machine is used to do this work. Crews will begin knocking the bricks off the building around 1:30 on Tuesday, January 23. This is loud and dusty work. Water will be sprayed into the air to help keep dust levels down. However, there still will be dust and dust may accumulate on vehicles parked in the parking deck.
The sidewalk on the north side of Hargett Street is closed along the construction limits, and some of the on-street parking on Hargett Street has also been removed. The sidewalk closure will remain in place for the duration of the project.

Demo is underway! After a short ceremony on Tuesday, January 23, the demolition of the old police station's exterior started.
Crews are using a large machine that breaks the building's brick exterior walls, which then fall to the ground. To keep dust down a giant water spraying device is also used. The water device works the same as a snow-blowing machine.
This week, the team is separating the debris and continuing to demolish the building's façade. The demolition phase of the project is expected to take about seventeen weeks. That includes both the standing structure and the basement.
