Update on Public Comment Period for City Council Meetings

This news article is more than a year old.

The Community Engagement Board was tasked with making recommendations for alternative formats for scheduling City Council public comment period. At the March 21 City Council meeting, staff provided an overview of the recommendations of the Community Engagement Board (CEB).

Following the presentation, City Council agreed to:

  1. Remove the public comment period from the evening session of the first Tuesday City Council meeting. This will relieve the pressure on public hearings that often run late into the evening.
  2. Add a meeting for public comments only to the second Tuesday of the month following the City Council work session.
  3. Allow three minutes per speaker, guaranteed.

Current public comment period - First Tuesday at 7 p.m. and third Tuesday at 1 p.m.
Proposed Change to Public Comment Period - Second Tuesday (time TBD) and third Tuesday at 1 p.m.

The Raleigh City Council instructed staff to get public feedback on when public comment should begin during the second Tuesday of each month. We encourage all residents to respond to this short poll so that we can determine the best start time. City staff will report back to City Council during the May 2 meeting.
