Sustainable Cities Initiative

Raleigh is one of 25 participating cities

“We aim for all people who call Raleigh home to feel a sense of safety, belonging, health and well-being.”

Raleigh is one of the 25 cities participating in the Bloomberg American Sustainable Cities (BASC) initiative. Thanks to the initiative, the City receives assistance from a three-person innovation team (i-team). The team can help the City test solutions that meet pressing resident needs. Team members have experience in systems thinking, data analysis, and project management. They are also experienced in civic design. Civic design means involving community engagement and research to address public issues.

The i-team reports to the City Manager’s Office. Team members also work with the Office of Sustainability and the Office of Strategy & Innovation. In addition, the team and City partner with other groups, including Southeast Raleigh Promise and Partners for Environmental Justice.

Goals

The three-year Bloomberg American Sustainable Cities initiative aims to build more resilient and economically thriving communities.

In Raleigh, rising heat, flooding, and energy costs create climate and economic challenges for residents. Rapid growth has increased the cost of living and accelerated displacement. It’s threatening the economic and environmental health and well-being of established residents.

Raleigh is committed to establishing itself as a national model for managing growth responsibly. The City aims to do that in ways that consider the disproportionate impact growth has on legacy residents and neighborhoods. Through this commitment, the City wants all residents to feel a sense of safety, belonging, and well-being.
