Public Service Recognition Week

City of Raleigh workers are dedicated to public service

Connecting with the community is at the heart of public service.

From water lab technicians and park maintenance crews to animal control officers and solid waste services crews, there are close to 7,000 full and part-time workers whose primary mission is to make the daily lives of Raleigh residents better.

Carrie Beaver, Transportation Department Executive Management Coordinator

“I love working in the public sector because I genuinely care about people. I am a strong advocate for both our internal staff and our residents. I want everyone to feel heard and supported, especially those who may not always feel they have a voice. I speak up for others, and my calm, helpful nature allows me to connect with people from all walks of life.”

Jason Holmes, Transportation Supervisor

“I chose a career in public service because it has given me the opportunity to make a difference in people’s lives.  Roads, bridges, and transportation systems are the backbone of our community as they connect people to jobs, schools, healthcare, and each other.  I enjoy leading teams, coordinating resources, and implementing strategies that improve infrastructure and service delivery.  It’s rewarding to know that my work has a real impact on the community. “

“I love working as a public servant as I am living my dream and passion of making a small difference to better the lives of others around me. As a planner and urban designer, I am passionate about engaging the community to plan, design and shape the future of Raleigh. Public service is the most rewarding and fulfilling experience for me as each day coming into work, I am motivated as I realize that I could contribute in small to significant ways, towards making Raleigh a better community for all. As key projects or policies get implemented and the community benefits become apparent over time, there is boundless, immeasurable joy I experience as a public servant.”

Public Service Recognition Week has been observed since 1985 and with good reason: these folks, City of Raleigh employees included, perform critical services for the community and they do it with compassion and professionalism.
