New Director of Engineering Services Named

Byron Sanders began his new duties on Oct. 4

The City of Raleigh is pleased to announce that Byron Sanders has been named Director of Engineering Services for the City of Raleigh.

Mr. Sanders has served as the Assistant Engineering Services Director since July 2023 where he has been responsible for the City’s Roadway Design and Construction Division, Construction Management - Public Safety and Special Projects Division, and Construction Management - Parks Division where he’s helping lead implementation of the 2022 Parks Bond.  Mr. Sanders has provided leadership on complex, high-impact initiatives such as delivery of the 2022 Parks Bond projects, New Bern Avenue Bus Rapid Transit, and Raleigh’s New City Hall,

“Our city is growing and along with that growth comes numerous projects that will help our community thrive. Byron has a wealth of experience working with complex projects and I know we will benefit from that,” said Assistant City Manager Michael Moore.  “I have worked closely with Byron over the last few years and am excited he will be leading this department.”

Prior to joining the City of Raleigh, Mr. Sanders spent more than 18 years at the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT). There, he worked on various projects across our state and last served there as NCDOT’s State Utilities Manager.

“I’m excited to step into the role of Engineering Services Director and look forward to working alongside our talented and dedicated team,” said Mr. Sanders. “I look forward to leading our team as we work on projects that improve the quality of life here for Raleigh residents.”

Mr. Sanders graduated from N.C. State University with a degree in Civil Engineering. October 4 marked his first official day as Director of Engineering Services.
