Responding to potential AI cybersecurity threats
City of Raleigh’s IT Security Architect James Krause earned a perfect score in an AI security contest. The competition was the AI Detection and Response Survivor Game at a recent CrowdStrike’s Fal.Con 2026 conference in Las Vegas.
Krause successfully completed every challenge in the hands-on exercise, which placed participants in the role of an AI security defender. The game tested their ability to make effective decisions under pressure. At the same time, contestants had to protect an organization’s AI systems from realistic cyberthreats.
Participants used CrowdStrike Falcon AI Detection and Response technology to:
- Identify how AI was being used
- Block attempts to manipulate AI tools
- Manage unauthorized AI agents
- Prevent sensitive information from reaching an AI model.

“Attackers continue to evolve, and their latest evolution is the adoption of AI to accelerate attacks. Emerging trends also indicate we’re not from purely AI-orchestrated, AI-driven attacks, where humans aren’t involved at all,” said Krause.
“This competition tested our ability to adapt, detect, and contain AI based attacks. It echoes the work we’ve done internally to evolve security maturity and prepare Raleigh for a future where AI is used to attack everything, everywhere, all at once."
Achieving a perfect score demonstrates both strong technical expertise and the ability to respond quickly to complex cybersecurity situations. These skills support our IT’s ongoing work to protect City systems, information, and the digital services employees and residents rely on.
Fal.Con 2026 brought more than 10,000 cybersecurity professionals and technology leaders to Las Vegas for four days of sessions, workshops, and hands-on learning focused on securing organizations in the age of AI.
