City of Raleigh Lights the Night for Fallen Firefighters

This news article is more than a year old.

This year, the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend will be celebrated May 6 and May 7. The City of Raleigh will join the nation to honor the 144 fire service members who died in the line of duty during the previous year.

The Raleigh Fire Department and the City of Raleigh will honor fallen firefighters by participating in the “Light the Night for Fallen Firefighters” national tribute.

We plan to light some of our local downtown landmarks red during the weekend.

Swapping out regular light bulbs for red ones serves as a symbol of support and comfort to the families whose loved ones are being honored and remembered.

The Raleigh Fire Department will also hold a tribute to Lt. Brent Upton, who passed away in 2021. The tribute will take place on Saturday, May 6 and Sunday, May 7, at 8 p.m. The department will turn off our station lights and with the apparatus in quarters turn on the emergency lights for a one-minute moment of silence.

“We hope that our community will appreciate these displays of recognition. It means a lot to the families of the fallen,” said Assistant Fire Chief Lowell Smith of the Raleigh Fire Department.
