Raleigh Blvd Trail Realignment and Relocation Project

New trail construction

A section of the Crabtree Creek Trail between N. Raleigh Blvd and Crabtree Blvd (between mile markers 5 ¼ and 6) has experienced stream bank erosion causing the need for trail repairs. The section of trail will align through a wooded area parallel to an existing sewer easement and rejoin the existing path east of mile marker 5½. A second section of the trail, west of mile marker 5 ¼,  will be relocated away from the stream bank and parallel to the existing sewer. This section of Crabtree Creek Trail will be closed during construction, however, a detour will be provided utilizing Remington Rd, Marlborough Rd, Rumson Rd, Barksdale Dr, and N Raleigh Blvd. There are no sidewalks along Barksdale Rd and a portion of Remington Rd, therefore pedestrian access is limited.

Construction

Due to heavy rainfall and storms in Raleigh since end of November, significant sedimentation occurred in the Creek. As a result, it is necessary to remove the excess sedimentation and recompact the trail area. This extra work requires adding an additional three months to complete the project. The project is expected to be completed September 2024.

Construction began in July 10, 2023. While in construction this section of Crabtree Creek Trail is closed. A detour map is shown below. The detour utilizes Remington Rd (sections with no sidewalk), Marlborough Rd, Rumson Rd (no sidewalk), Barksdale Dr, and N Raleigh Blvd.

The Capital Area Greenway System was first adopted by City Council in 1976. This plan proposed a system of linear parks located primarily along rivers, streams, and creeks, and included the opportunity for an interconnected system of pedestrian trails across the region.
